02.07.2006 Sergei
Shipov is the winner of Midnight Sun Chess Challenge 2006! Today
he beat Kjetil A. Lie with black. A very deserved winner!
Magnus Carlsen took second place with 7 points; equal on points
but with better tie breaks than third place holder Leif Erlend
Johannessen. Local hero Gunnar Johnsen from Tromsø grabbed the 4th place
splitting the grandmasters.
Final results are now available.

picture gallery is ready for viewing with pictures from the
tournament, the fishing trip for players and organizers and from
the chess camp.
01.07.2006 Nothing is
decided before the last round of Midnight Sun Chess Challenge.
Shipov drew Johannessen and keeps his 0,5 point lead to his
Norwegian challengers Carlsen, Johannessen and Lie. With
Carlsens win today he do absolutely still have a chance for the
first place in the tournament, but also Johannessen and Lie are
of course potential winners of the tournament.
Results
and pairings are now available.

Tomorrow we have the
following top games:
Lie - Shipov
Carlsen - Hammer
Rozentalis - Krasenkow
Johannessen - Royset
30.06.2006
Before this game Magnus Carlsen had been undefeated for a long
time. Today though the streak was over. Carlsen made a mistake
in a promising position, and lost to Shipov. This was not the
day for the young and promising as Jon Ludvig Hammer also lost
to Kjetil A. Lie. Eirik Gullaksen showed strenght by drawing top
seed Michal Krasenkow, while Leif Erlend Johannessen showed no
mercy against Joanna Dworokowska. Of the local player we should
mention that Lars Andreassen drew against FM Frank Wuts, and the
very talented 13 years old Benjamin Arvola beat former North
Norwegian champion Stein Jensen.
Results
and pairings are now available.

29.06.2006 Todays top
game between Eduardas Rozentalis and Magnus Carlsen was quite as
violents we could have hoped for and ended in a draw in 22 moves.
The other games between GMs also ended in a draw. Local hope
Paal Royset had to bite the dust against IM Eirik Gullaksen in
an endgame after having a good position earlier in the game.
Results
and pairings are now available.

Tomorrow we can look forward

Lie - Hammer
28.06.2006 Todays top
game between Magnus Carlsen and Michal Krasenkow ended in a draw.
Even so the game was very exciting, with Carlsen having the
initiative all the way. The computer suggest that 30.Rf1 would
perhaps give better chances for a win than the played 30.Rg1.
Shipov and Rozentalis played a quick draw, and are of course
both still fighting in the top. Todays surprise was
Narvik-player Soraas' draw against IM Joanna Dworakowska.
Results
and pairings are now available.

Some of the top games

27.06.2006 Here are
a few pictures from the tournament and the children chess
camp (use the arrows at the bottom of the pages to navigate the
series).
27.06.2006 Four round
are now played, and Magnus Carlsen is alone on the top of the
standing. Today he beat Leif Erlend Johannessen in 36 moves in a
Benko gambit. The game between Krasenkow and Shipov was very
dramatic with Krasenkow being in desperate time-trouble before
the first time control. He managed to make 8 moves in 10 seconds,
and took the game safely to a draw afterwards. We also see that
Jon Ludvig Hammer is on route to a IM norm after beating IM
Eirik Gullaksen today.
The transmition of live games

with some downtime as a result. We will tomorrow move our live
games to another web host, and we hope we can offer more stable
transmitions in the days to come.
Results
and pairings are now available.
